ZEYNA
It was eerie when Zeyna returned from training the next day, knowing all that had happened in her chambers the night before. It felt almost like a fever dream, like itâd never happened.
She looked at herself in the mirror. There was a small but harsh bruise on her neck just beneath the lower rim of her mask, from where Daemos had given her a hickey. She ran her fingers over it, noting the bruises along her wrists as well. They were reminders that everything that had happened was in fact real.
Real enough that she had a gut feeling he would be back.
She opened her window and leaned against the windowsill. The sun was setting just above the horizon, casting red and and orange light across the clouds painted across the sky. The soft breeze blew over her mask, its cool touch making its way underneath. She closed her eyes in the feel of its bliss.
The realm of physical pleasure was always one that sheâd never known how to approach. If she lay with other champions, she made herself vulnerable. And if she lay with servants ⦠well, that wasnât a good idea. Servants gossiped, and gossip like that was bound to draw Lady Cassiaâs attention. She could picture exactly what her master would say.
If Zeyna had enough time to fuck one of the human servants, then she wasnât training hard enough. That was reason enough for punishment.
She wondered what would have happened had Daemos not left her so suddenly. Would they have gone further? Would she have experienced the full scope of pleasure that others whispered about?
Dangerous questions.
It was better that Daemos left.
She wished she knew why he left. She suspected that she would never find out.
There was a time when she imagined Miran to be the only man sheâd ever be with. Of course, she had been a child and hardly knew what that meant. Something along the lines of kissing and cuddling. After all, that was all sheâd seen of her parents, and she knew her parents to have been a happy couple. She simply wanted what they had, and that was love.
Shadows passed far overhead, drawing Zeynaâs attention. A Fae couple, each circling the other. Their high pitched laughter reached her ears.
A younger version of her would have thought them in love, but sheâd come to realize the truth long ago.
There was no place for love in Morswen.
The Fae did not love like humans. Theirs did not last them until their final breath. Theirs lived for a century or two, until some spite caused their relationship to either implode or die a sad, quiet end.
No, the Faeâs love was more akin to lust. Something temporary, something to cut into the dullness of everyday living.
Still, lust was not bad. It sounded decent enough, at least from the stories of the other humans that experienced it.
And if last night was any indicator of what lust felt like, then well ⦠It felt decent enough too.
Zeyna waited for the sun to set, continuing to watch as the moon and the stars took their places against the inky darkness.
